
2008/09 HRINZ HR PERSON OF THE YEAR
Within the HRINZ HR Person of the Year category, there are 3 sub-categories:
- HRINZ HR Generalist Person of the Year, in association with Mt Eliza
- HRINZ HR Specialist Person of the Year, in association with Haines
- HRINZ Young HR Practitioner of the Year, in association with Wheeler Campbell
The winners of these three categories will then be judged for the overall supreme award of HRINZ HR Person of the Year.
What are the Judges looking for?
1.HRINZ HR Generalist Person of the Year, in association with Mt Eliza
This category is for practitioners who can demonstrate the required attributes in a generalist role with competence in the majority of the HR areas. The practitioner could come from a medium to large organisation as part of the HR team or could be the only HR practitioner in a smaller organisation. The practitioner could also be a consultant either on an individual basis or working within an organisation. Applicants are required to demonstrate qualities of significant leadership in people management in the organisation and/or sector.
To be eligible to enter this Award, there must also be a New Zealand connection. For this category, the applicant needs to be working in New Zealand and demonstrating best practice in the New Zealand context.
2.HRINZ HR Specialist Person of the Year, in assocation with Haines
This category is for practitioners who can demonstrate the required attributes in a specialist role within organisations or contracting to organisations, either as an individual or through a firm. Specialist areas may include:
- Employment Law
- Employment Relations
- Learning and Development
- Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness
- Organisational Development
- Recruitment
- Remuneration
To be eligible to enter this Award, there must also be a New Zealand connection. For this category, the applicant needs to be working in New Zealand and demonstrating best practice in the New Zealand context.
3.HRINZ Young HR Practitioner of the Year, in assocation with Wheeler Campbell
This category is for practitioners aged 35 years & under as at 31 December 2008. They could be either Generalists or Specialists (see above).
To be eligible to enter this Award, there must also be a New Zealand connection. For this category, the applicant needs to be working in New Zealand and demonstrating best practice in the New Zealand context.
Entry Application
Step One: Applicants must complete and forward the Entry Template (refer to ‘How to Enter page). Maximum 9 pages in total.
Step Two: Applicants must also submit:
- Current Full Curriculum Vitae
- Current Position Description (or similar document)
- Completed Nomination Form
- Names of two referees
Step Three: We require 4 copies of your entry application to be forwarded to us no later than 1 October 2008. It should be A4, single sided and posted to HRINZ HR Awards, PO Box 11450, Wellington.
Step Four: We also require an electronic copy of your entry provided either via email (keri.bloomfield@hrinz.org.nz) or on disc. This needs to be exactly the same as what you are submitting via hardcopy including any appendices and or attachments.

Judging Process
All entries will be judged by a panel of regional judges from your local branch along with a regional co-ordinator, this panel will be known as the Regional Judging Panel.
Short listed candidates at a regional level will undergo referee checks and interview with the regional judging panel.
The regional judging will be completed by 31 October 2008 and entrants will then be invited to a special Awards Branch Meeting during November where regional Merit and Distinction winners will be announced. Those that win Distinction Awards will then be put forward for National Judging.
A National Judging Panel will then shortlist all Distinction Award winners. Those that are short listed will then be invited to Wellington to take part in the final judging process which consists of a 10-15 minute presentation/interview to the national judging panel in Wellington on the day of the Gala Dinner & Awards Presentation (February 2009). The presentation/interview will form the last step in the judging process, after which an overall winner will be decided and announced at the function that evening.
Travel to Wellington and accommodation will be provided for one representative from your organisation. A complimentary ticket to attend the Gala Dinner & Awards Presentation function is also included.
Judging Definitions:
The National Judging Panel will consist of:
- 3 Regional Judging Co-ordinators
- Current HRINZ National President
- An independent business community member
If a conflict of interest, or a perceived conflict of interest arises between entrants and judges, then an alternative independent judge will be appointed to replace original National Judge.
Regional Judging Co-ordinators will be assigned to the below regions:
Northern: Northland, Auckland, Waikato
Central: Taranaki, Manawatu, Wellington
Southern: Nelson, Christchurch, Wild South
Levels of Recognition:
Merit Award: Awarded at a regional or branch level recognising the contribution the individual has made to HR in the Region or Branch even though they haven't met the criteria to go forward to national judging for the overall awards.
Distinction Award: Awarded at a regional or branch level acknowledging an entry which has met the criteria to be put forward to the National Judging Panel.
Overall Winners: Awarded at the National Gala Dinner Presentation evening in February 2009, recognising the top entrant in each category.
Special Recognition Awards: The National Judging Panel has discretion to award special recognition awards in any sector. ie. Public Sector, Not for Profit etc. Should any entries receive such an award this will be announced at the National Gala Dinner and Presentation in February 2009.
What’s in it for you?
All three award winners will become ambassadors for the Institute and the profession for the year following their win. As ambassadors it is important that winners have credibility within their own organisation and the wider HR community. As an ambassador you will be asked to:
- Speak at branch events
- Speak at the annual conference
- Speak and participate in a range of business events
- You will also be a role model for emerging HR practitioners and receive national media coverage.
The criteria for the categories have now been aligned with the new competency framework and winners in the specialist and generalist categories will become professional member of the Institute (if not already).

2008/09 HRINZ HR INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR
What is an HR Initiative?
The HRINZ HR Initiative of the Year was created in 1999 to acknowledge the good work being done by HR teams who introduce innovation into HR practices. It is not about ‘business as usual’ but rather about quality initiatives that have been created by thinking and acting outside the square, and may have significant impact on business performance. It is also an opportunity for members of the business community to recognise the contribution that HR can make at this level and to raise the profile for HR as a business partner.
What are the Judges looking for?
Applicants are required to demonstrate to the judging panel how the success of their HR Initiative has contributed to the overall business performance of their organisation and/or sector. The HR Initiative should have been developed in the past 5 years and must be able to show results.
Initiatives could be based around one or a combination of the following HRINZ HR Competencies :
- Business Knowledge Competency
- HR Delivery
- Personal Credibility
- Strategic Contribution
- Business Technology
To be eligible to enter this Award there has to be a New Zealand connection. It must be a New Zealand company that has significant operations in New Zealand.

Special Recognition Awards - Southern Cross Wellness Award
The National Judging Panel has discretion to award a special recognition award, the Southern Cross Wellness Award, to either an individual or a team who has entered into any of the general award categories. This award will recognise excellence and comittment to wellness within the workplace. This award will be announced at the Gala Dinner, on 26th February 2009.

State Services Commission Public Sector Special Recognition Award
The National Judging Panel has discretion to award a special recognition award, the State Services Commission Public Sector Award, to either an individual or a team who works for a Public Sector organisation, who has entered into any of the general award categories. This award will recognise excellence and comittment to improving HR within a public sector organisation. This award will be announced at the Gala Dinner, on 26th February 2009.
